I grew up in El Paso, on the border, in a place where you learn early that nobody hands you anything. As a Mexican-American kid, I watched people work twice as hard for half the credit — and I watched what happened when the system didn't listen to them.
That's what took me to Yale, back to Texas to teach high school government and economics, and finally to the University of Houston Law Center.
