Which consulates in Houston can help after an accident?
Houston has consulates for Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, the Dominican Republic and other countries. A consulate can help with identity documents, civil records, help for nationals who are hurt or detained and, after a death, sending a loved one home. Nicaragua's Houston consulate has closed, and no Venezuelan consulate is open to the public.

How a consulate can help after an accident
Your country's consulate can't handle your injury claim, but it can help with the things around it. Services vary by country, so always ask, but consulates commonly help with:
- Identity documents: passports and consular ID cards, such as Mexico's matrícula consular, if yours were lost or destroyed in the crash.
- Civil records: birth, marriage and death certificates, which matter when a family member is killed.
- Protection and assistance: help for nationals who are hurt, detained or missing, and contact with family back home.
- Bringing a loved one home: help with transporting remains after a death.

If your country has no consulate here
- Nicaragua: the Houston consulate closed. The nearest are in Miami, New York and Washington, D.C.
- Venezuela: Venezuelan consulates in the U.S. closed in 2019. The two governments announced in 2026 that consular relations would be restored, but as of this review no Venezuelan consulate is open to the public and passport services remain suspended. Check official announcements before you travel or apply.
- Cuba: there is no Cuban consulate in Houston. Consular services come from the Consular Section of the Embassy of Cuba in Washington, D.C.
What a consulate is not
A consulate does not represent you against an insurance company and cannot file your claim. For that, call us. Jimmy Suerken is a Mexican-American attorney who speaks Spanish, and you can talk with him directly. Whether you are from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Venezuela, Colombia, Cuba, Nicaragua or anywhere else, your rights after an accident in Texas are the same.

Other ways people ask this
Can my consulate help me get a new ID after a crash?
Usually. Most consulates issue passports, and many issue a consular ID card, such as Mexico's matrícula consular. Ask yours what it offers.
Will the consulate pay to send my family member's body home?
Some consulates help with transporting remains and, in some cases, with part of the cost. Ask your consulate. Funeral and transport costs can also be part of a wrongful death claim.
Does going to the consulate affect my injury claim?
No. Getting documents from your consulate is separate from your claim, and it can help us prove who you are and who your family is.
Can the consulate recommend a lawyer?
Some consulates keep lists of lawyers. You can choose any lawyer you trust, and the consultation with us is free and confidential.
